MANILA, Philippines — In celebration of International Coastal Clean-Up Day on Saturday, the government took part in a cleanup drive right on the coast where it stirred up controversy over its expensive beautification of Manila Bay.

The ICC International Coastal Cleanup is held every year during the third week of September. And this year as a celebration, the chosen theme for this year's celebration is "Fighting for trash Free Seas-Philippines: Ending the Flow at the Source.

“Volunteers from government, private organizations, and private individuals came to the Baywalk’s coastline with their own garbage bags as well,” she said in a statement released, Friday, Sept. 30.

She said that out of the 4,500 sacks, 3,000 were delivered by the DENR Central Office via the Manila Bay Coordinating Office (MBCO) and 1,500 by the DENR-National Capital Region, which comprises the DENR-MEO West.

The Manila City government, the Metropolitan Manila Development Authority, the Philippine Army, the Philippine Air Force, the Philippine National Police (PNP), the Philippine National Police-Maritime Group, and the Philippine Coast Guard were just a few of the participating national, local, and private organizations that provided more garbage bags.

The Philippine Air Force also participated in the cleaning of the Manila Baywalk Dolomite Beach in conjunction with the celebration of their founding anniversary, 50 people of the Philippine Air Force volunteered for the cleanup and according to them most of the garbage washed up on the shore is Plastic waste.

International Coastal Cleanupbegan over 35 years ago when a community came together with the common goal of collecting and documenting litter littering our shores. This movement was catalyzed by the passion and spirit of two dedicated individuals.

Linda and Kathy contacted the Texas General Land Office, local businesses, and other avid ocean enthusiasts to plan what would be the Ocean Conservancy's first cleanup. They asked volunteers to go beyond garbage collection and record each item collected on a standardized data card to find ways to clean up the ocean's litter in the future.

The cleanup has grown a lot in her 35 years since Linda and Kathy first cleaned up. Each year, volunteers from all over the United States and more than 150 states and territories come to help clean up their communities.

Over the years, the movement has created families that span oceans and borders. It's a network of people working together for something bigger than us.
